South Face Design/Build
Brownsvile, Vermont
Company History Page
South Face Design/Build was formed in 1980 by Ted Emerson
& Jim Lyall, specializing
in passive solar design and energy-conserving construction. We designed
& built sunspace additions, passive solar and super-insulated houses,
and installed over 75 solar domestic hot water systems. The precision and
innovation demanded by this work has made us leaders in quality custom
craftsmanship. Through the years, we have built about two dozen houses
and designed about two dozen more that have been built as far away as Telluride,
Colorado. The total of additions is closer to sixty, and the renovation
projects are countless.

Jim
Lyall (B.A. Dartmouth, B.Arch. Syracuse.) designed and built his first
pasive solar house in 1974. Five years later, as Design Manager for Timberpeg,
he won HUD's National Passive Solar Design Award.
Ted Emerson (B.S., University of Maine) is partner in
charge of our construction operations and is our solar hot water expert. Since Peace Corps service in 1971,
Ted has been involved in all phases of residential and commercial construction
as carpenter, foreman, and principal.
